Baja California Sur is found at the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico’s North West. Near to the United States and explorable by car, there’s plenty to see and do across this region. From surf towns and beautiful beaches, to amazing local food and luxury hotels, we loved travelling across Baja California. So here’s our list of the best places to visit in Baja California.
1. Todos Santos
Todos Santos is the ultimate bohemian surf town. Boasting colonial architecture with both an artistic and surfing scene, Todos Santos has an amazing mixture of elements going on. Shop the galleries and boutique shops or explore the surrounding cactus desert landscape. There’s something to do for everyone.
We stayed at the architectural delight of Paradero Hotel. This was the perfect base to check out the region, going surfing and sampling the best tacos. Watching sunset from our luxury abode with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains turning purple was very memorable. And did I forget to mention their octopus tacos!?
Don’t miss: Have a day at Cerritos Beach with lunch at Barracuda, as well as an awe inspiring ocean view hike to a secret lookout!
For a perfect day, head for sundowners at the very aesthetic San Christobel Hotel.

2. La Paz
La Paz is around 1 hour drive from Todos Santos and is well worth a visit. Much more populated and situated with a harbour instead of beaches, we enjoyed the town mostly for its amazing food. In particular our favourite spot for tacos was McFisher restaurant. I’m still dreaming of the Oaxaca cheese, marlin and jalapeño tacos!
Our main attraction to La Paz was to see the famous Balandra Beach. Balandra Bay is nature protected and it’s easy to see why. The bay is a shallow inlet of shifting white sands and incredible blue hues, surrounded by mountains and cactus. You can grab a palapa on the beach or hire kayaks to head out on the bay. Balandra beach open to the public in two different time allocations. Visit from 8 am to 12 pm or from 1 to 5 pm. Just make sure you arrive early ahead of the open times as there is a limit on the number of people that can visit each day.

3. San Jose del Cabo
Close to the international airport but a very affluent area, San Jose del Cabo is home to many luxury resorts. We stayed at One & Only Palmilla and had a completely indulgent experience. From the spa and incredible dining options, to the perfect location overlooking the Sea of Cortez, O&O Palmilla was very special.
The hotel has a very hacienda style that blends perfectly with the Mexican culture and cuisine. Our favourite spot was the Breeze Restaurant, overlooking the cliffside pool and sea beyond. We watched whales from our lunch table within 5 minutes of arriving!
4. Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is the tourist hotspot of Baja California Sur. Known as a party place, there’s much more to see and do in this area. We visited here a few years ago and loved adventuring to the less visited beaches of Chileno Beach and Santa Maria. Grab an ice cooler and a few cold drinks, then set up in an empty stretch of clean sand and calm waters for the day.
We also loved exploring Lovers and Divorce Beach right near town, climbing over the boulders and jumping into the fresh blue ocean. I believe you can still hike there from town, otherwise there are water taxis or boat tours that can take you out to this beautiful headland.
